Back to School Supplies Drive

The Family Center and St. Vincent de Paul work together to collect school supplies for children in financial need.  Please help give all of Florence County’s children a “bright future.”

Donations of the following new items are greatly appreciated:  backpacks, notebooks, pencils/pens/erasers, rulers, crayons, markers, glue.

No time to shop?  Let us do the shopping for you!!  Cash donations are also appreciated!!  Donations may be dropped off at the Family Center or at St. Vincent de Paul.

St. Vincent also provides additional help for families with back-to-school kids. . . through certificates for new shoes.  Each year 100-150 children are helped through your generosity.

Thank you for building a brighter future!

Car Seat Safety Check-Ups

In today’s world, car seats are required equipment for raising our children.  You can’t take baby home from the hospital without one, and our state even provides minimum guidelines for car seat use as a child grows.  It’s all about safety, and protecting those who are too young to protect themselves.

Car seats should be easy to install, and children should be easy to secure in car seats.  It shouldn’t be rocket science, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.  Nationwide, more than 80% of car seats aren’t used correctly, and that puts children at risk!

Do you use your child’s car seat correctly?  Are you familiar with the owner’s manual for both the seat and the car?  Do you know how the type of seat belt you have affects the way you install the car seat?   Does the car seat “fit” the car?  Does the car seat move less than 1” side-to-side?

Are the shoulder straps adjusted right?  Is the retainer clip at armpit level. . . always?  Does your child fit the seat?

Let us help you keep your children safe!  Our certified Child Passenger Safety Technician will help you make sure your child rides in a seat that is safely installed.  Please call for an appointment!  Toll Free:  1-888-432-6495.

Florence County Giving Tree

Every year in Florence County, our community teams up to sponsor a “Giving Tree.”  Clothing and toys are collected, and the gifts are given to children in families with low income and special needs.  Giving Tree tags are available in November throughout the community, including the bank, schools, post office, and local churches.

Family applications are available at the Family Center, Health Department, Human Services, and St. Vincent de Paul.  Applications are needed back at St. Vincent’s in early November.

For more information, call St. Vincent de Paul at 715-528-4720.

Gift distribution will occur in early December, and volunteers are needed to help provide one or two hours of childcare while parents shop at the Giving Tree.  Please call 715-528-5566 to help.

Parents as Teachers

In the first few years, children learn more and at a faster pace than at any other time in life.  You help shape your child’s future through the kinds of experiences you provide.  Your child was born to learn, and as a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher.

Parents as Teachers is a nationally recognized early childhood program that serves families from pregnancy through kindergarten.  A PAT certified Family Center staff will meet with your family and provide science based information about early childhood brain development, as well as activities designed to enhance your child’s language development, intellectual growth, social development, and motor skills.

PAT families receive personalized visits that help parents maximize the teachable moments in every day life.  Whether you are expecting your first child, or already have children, The Family Center and PAT can help you provide the best possible start in life.
