Lake Monitoring Program
The Florence County Land Conservation Department
monitors a minimum of 50 waterbodies every year.
Parameters studied include aquatic invasive species
presence/absence, water clarity, temperature, dissolved oxygen,
pH, and conductivity.
This data can be used by lake managers to
determine the health of a lake and by fishermen to determine
where to find fish.

Purple Loosestrife Biological Control Project
In spring of 2009, the Florence County Land
Conservation Department initiated an interagency effort to raise
and release Galerucella beetles, the natural predators of
purple loosestrife.
Purple loosestrife is a
harmful wetland invader and it is not widely
distributed in Florence County, so existing populations will be
easy to control.
more pictures from Florence County!
The appendices of
See Cella Chow!
contain detailed information on rearing and releasing purple
loosestrife beetles.

Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition
Invasive species do not honor jurisdictional
boundaries and this poses challenges for land managers and land
owners trying to control invasive species. Cooperative
Weed Management Areas (CWMA) are forming across the nation to
dissolve political boundaries and make invasive species
management more feasible.
Representatives from
Dickinson
Conservation District, Florence County Land Conservation
Department, U.S. Forest Service, University of Wisconsin –
Extension Service, & Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
are working to form the Wild Rivers Invasive Species
Cooperative. Visit the
Wild Rivers
Invasive Species Coalition website or contact us at
wildriverscwma@gmail.com
for more information.
For
more information about CWMAs visit the
Midwest Invasive Plant Network.
